From the City of Lights to the Golden Triangle: A Week in Central and Northern Thailand

From Bangkok to Chiang Rai, Thailand is a treasure trove of forested mountains, dense jungle, rolling rivers, ancient temples, rustic villages and the bright lights of the capital. Explore the scenery and culture of central and northern Thailand with this week-long tour, which has been carefully designed to show you the very best that the country has to offer. Begin your journey in Bangkok, truly a city that never sleeps. Visit its historic landmarks, winding canals and busy markets, and experiment with its world-famous nightlife if you dare! Head onwards to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ayutthaya, where the ruins of this once-great city will make you marvel. Spend your fourth day in the past, touring the crumbling temples and other astounding buildings of Sukhothai and Sri Satchanalai, further evidence (if any were needed) of the extraordinary strength of the Thai people. Cruise in a traditional wooden boat down the Mekong River towards the Golden Triangle – once infamous for opium growing, this area is now better known for its steep mountains, lush vegetation and world-class trekking. Explore rural villages as you go, populated by Thailand’s colorful ethnic minority groups. After a little time in Chiang Rai, the gateway to the Golden Triangle, visit the border town of Mae Sai. If you’re lucky, you’ll have the opportunity to cross the border and spend the afternoon in Myanmar. From here, head to Chiang Mai, a small city so seductively laid-back you’ll be longing to stay for weeks. After seeing the sights and going for an elephant ride, you’ll return to Bangkok by plane.
